The Champagne Valley region of the Central Drakensberg offers some excellent dining options from family style venues to some up market 5 star dining. This is our guide to the Central Drakensberg Restaurants we think you will enjoy.

Dragons Rest Pub and Restaurant

Conveniently situated on the R600 opposite Wits End Mountain Resort. The pub serves a selection of Pub meals and the restaurant serves a variety of al la carte meals, including their popular ox tail. On Wednesday evening they offer a dinner special at a special price. For the evening of Wednesday 5 October the special is Eisbein & Mash for R 80.00 – very good value. Happy hour (with half priced drinks) is on Thursday from 6 to 7 pm. They also have a take – away menu.

Gooderson Monks Cowl Country Club

Situated at the Monks Cowl Golf Course. Recently taken over by the Gooderson Group this is a nice cozy pub and restaurant with reasonably priced meals. On Monday nights they offer a “local is lekker” special consisting of a 3 course meal.

To get there turn right at the Wits End gate, take the first right (after 2 kilometers), cross the river and then take the first left.

Champagne Castle Hotel

Situated close to the end of the R600 up in the mountains. Champagne Castle is one of the original hotels to be built in the area. They have beautiful views and lovely open gardens. They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets and although the selection is not as extensive as Champagne Sports Resort the food is excellent and the hotel has an old colonial ambiance.

Drakensberg Sun Hotel

Going towards the mountains turn right just after Champagne Sports Resort, or first left on the R600 from Wits End Resort. This stylish Canadian concept hotel offers a full buffet dining room. One of their specialities is the grilled trout. They also serve teas and snacks on the verandah. What really impresses about Drakensberg Sun is their well trained courteous staff.

Located at the crossroads at the entrance to The Valley, this restaurant has ambiance with a cozy inside restaurant and large outside dining area. They have an extensive al la carte menu, and offer pizzas as well. On weekends there is frequently live music on offer.

Champagne Sports Resort

This modern Resort, Timeshare and Golf course offer a large dining room style buffet with an extensive selection. Light inexpensive lunches are also served on the pool terrace.

The Nest Hotel

This Old style Country hotel offers reasonably priced dining room meals.

The Black Scabbert Portuguese Bistro

For traditional Portuguese food try the bistro situated on the R600 on the way to Winterton. Their prawns are a treat not to be missed.

The Berg Brewery & Bistro

The champagne Valley now has it’s own craft brewery. It is situated at the air field along the R 600 just past the Cedarwood shopping center on the way to Winterton. There is also a bistro at the same site.

Tea Gardens & Coffee shops

Valley Bakery on the R600 between Cedarwood Village and the Nest Hotel is  a popular venue for tea coffee and cakes and light lunches and is open Mondays to Saturdays. There is a coffee shop at Cedarwood village shopping center ( The Purple Giraffe) offering Tea Coffee & lunches during the day and Scrumpy Jacks a bit further down the road near the Nest Hotel also offers light meals and their special honey baked cheese cake (the second best in the world).

The Waffle Hut

If you do not mind travelling the waffle hut half way to Winterton offers offer scrumptious waffles with decadent toppings. They have recently upgraded their premises with a nice new venue.

Ady’s Queen of Tarts

This coffee shop is situated  half way between Thokosiza and Winterton and offers a choice delectable teas and cakes and light lunches. This tastefully decorated venue is a good place to relax with friends and enjoy the well presented food.

Scrumpy Jack’s

This popular stop off point, featuring the glass bee hive and accompanying talk have moved to new premises  further  down the road to Winterton.( but still in the Champagne Valley). The new premises are much bigger than their old premises and now offer a full eatery, serving great coffees cakes light lunches etc.
