Champagne Valley Walking Club

Tuesday Walk

The club a group of energetic young at heart walkers do a walk every Tuesday. These walks range from 2 to 6 hours and are a good way of keeping up with local news as they are really a social event with a lot of talking on the way. All welcome. Perhaps it should be called the walk and talk club.

We have a new energetic team setting the hikes so we can look forward to a lot of new hikes in 2021. Hikes will now be set monthly in advance.

Please note that strict covid-19 protocols will apply.

February was a bad walking month due to the weather conditions. Hopefully March will be kinder to us.

The March program.

2 March-Towards Jacobs ladder from Calfargie. Meet at Cedarwood Village at 8.00 am. This is a 6 hour long grassland walk starting at the Calfargie KZN wildlife camp. The path ascends up towards the sandstone cliffs of the little berg offering magnificent views. We return the same way.

9 March- Wits End. This is an easy 2 hour walk on the Wits End property , a varied walk through mountain forest and grassland and past a small waterfall. The walk will be followed by tea and scones at the Wits End venue. Meet at Wits End car park at 8.00 am.

16 March. -Fern forest & Blue Grotto. Meet at Drakensberg Sun car park at 8.00 am. We walk up the valley and end at the Blue Grotto. An easy to moderate walk of 3 hours.

23 March-Hlatikhulu forest-Meet at KZN wildlife Monks Cowl car part at 8.00 am. This 4 hour moderate walk below the Little Berg goes past Sterkspruit falls crossing the river and then on to the forest and returning via Nandi’s falls.

30 March-Injasuthi- The Zulu name translated into English is ” valley of the Well fed dog”. Meet at Thokozisa car park at 8.00 am. This valley lies to the South of Champagne valley. This 6 hour hike is one not to be missed as we will hopefully be able to visit Battle Cave one of the few and most painted caves in the area. The main panel is of a fight scene with charging warriors, bleeding casualties, and women folk restraining their men folk from entering the battle.
